‘Hardwick Hall, more glass than wall’ is the magnificent Elizabethan Palace built by Bess, Countess of Shrewsbury. One of the most remarkable women in English history, she certainly believed in the importance of marriage. Previously the ancestral home of the Dukes of Devonshire, Hardwick Hall epitomizes Smythson’s interpretation of Renaissance elegance.

Majestically looking down upon everyone below, The Hall and its’ estate is an exceptional wedding and special event venue, primarily available between April and October. In our opinion, it is the perfect location in which to spend one of the most memorable days of your lives. Share with your loved ones the breath taking views across the Derbyshire Dales before taking them back in time and into Bess’s masterpiece and Hollywood’s’ Malfoy Manor in the Harry Potter films.

Civil Ceremonies & Civil Partnerships

Entering through the Gate House, you will walk the same path as Bess as you approach her Hall and its gigantic front doors. Behind those doors (and at the heart of the house), lies Hardwick’s majestic Entrance Hall. It is adorned with priceless tapestries hung above rich oak panelling and dominated by the colossus marble fireplace that strikingly bears the stags from Bess’s coat of arms.

An awesome space, the Entrance Hall was designed solely to captivate and impress those arriving at Hardwick.  Guaranteed to have the same effect upon your guests, it is here that Civil Ceremonies and Civil Partnerships are held below the gallery.

Seating a maximum of 75 people there really is no-where else like it in the world.

For the happy couple, after your ceremony, we extend the invitation to use the State Rooms for photographs. The State Rooms are stunning settings providing an amazing backdrop for dramatic photographs.

You and your guests can then enjoy the beautiful gardens, a glass of fizz and delicious canapés as you stroll round to the private East Court Rose Gardens. Exclusively yours to enjoy, the East Court Rose Gardens is ideally located at the back of the property and allows the Hall to take centre stage for your group shots and other photographs. Thankfully, Hardwick Hall was designed and built symmetrically and as a result, the front and back of the Hall are identical. This means that you will have both uninterrupted views and the chance to have your photos taken, enjoy your drinks and canapés and maybe a game of Croquet on the lawns at a leisurely pace before moving on to your Wedding Reception Celebrations.
