Planning your wedding is a lot of fun, but it can be hard too. Finding the perfect venue, finalising your guest list… and what about the theme?! You want your wedding theme to be unique and special; something that reflects you as a couple. Not to mention, you want to wow your guests when they arrive, entertain them throughout the day, and create something that they remember long after your special day ends.
For some people, the choice will feel obvious. But for some couples, it’s a little harder. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of slightly more unusual – but fun – wedding theme ideas. Read on for some celebration inspiration:
Go laid-back and boho with a festival theme
A festival-themed wedding used to be more unusual, but it’s gaining more popularity these days as couples gravitate towards more casual, fun wedding days – and with good reason.
A festival theme is perfect if you’re having a summer wedding: you can decorate inside and outside with bunting and fairy lights, and hire haybales and picnic tables for outdoor seating – as well as laying out picnic blankets in any outdoor areas. Add a signpost to guide guests around your ‘festival site’ – and make a festival program and wristbands to complete the festival logistics. If guests can camp out on the grounds or nearby fields, then all the better.
For food, keep it casual: a street food vendor or two will conjure up festival feels and give your guests a fun and quirky alternative to a formal sit-down meal.
As for entertainment? Live music is a must. Whether it’s a band or solo act, having a live performance at your wedding will add to the festival vibes and make sure you have a day to remember. Bonus points if you can host a late-night silent disco.
Go glamorous with a casino wedding day
If you want glitz and glamour, then a casino theme is perfect for your wedding day.
Set your dress code to black-tie – everyone loves dressing up – to ensure a sophisticated start to your wedding. Not only will this encourage your guests to embrace the theme and look amazing in the photos, but it will also set the tone of your wedding. This isn’t going to be a cheap and tacky party – your casino theme will be classy and stylish. You can also up the opulence by asking the staff to join in with the dressing up, as well as offering out cocktails and canapes.
There are plenty of companies you can hire casino tables and other accessories from and you only need a few tables to complete a theme that your guests will never forget. Roulette is a crowd-pleaser that rookies can enjoy easily, and poker is an old favourite and casino classic (though make sure you establish which variation you’re playing, such as Texas Holdem or Pineapple poker).
Feel the fun with a fairground
A fairground style wedding is perfect if you’re having an outdoor summer wedding: bunting, balloons and bright colours are the order of the day with a fairground wedding – think summer, fun and games.
If you want to splash out, there are lots of fairground rides you can hire out such as ferris wheels, dodgems, and carousels. And if you want to keep your budget lower and you’re feeling creative, you can make your own outdoor games like hoopla, lucky ducks or welly throwing.
Your wedding food can be a lot of fun with a fairground theme too: a sweet stall with candy floss, pick ’n ’mix and popcorn is a must, and you could even serve hot dogs as late-night snacks to fuel your dancing guests.
Get your geek on and embrace your inner nerd
If you and your partner are total geeks then why not embrace this and make your wedding theme geeky and fun?
This is definitely a genre of wedding theme that we’re seeing on the rise now, and while it’s definitely not traditional, it’s great to see couples bringing this aspect of their personality to their special day and forgo the formalities. There are all sorts of ‘geeky’ themes you can pick from, depending on your interests.
If you’re a comic-book nerd, then a superhero theme is the obvious choice. Your ushers can all wear superhero costumes under their suits for that photo or wear themed bowties and cufflinks. Your superhero wedding cake is a chance to get creative too — with each tier representing a different superhero or little Lego superheroes as cake toppers. Plus, you can decorate your tables with pop art and bright colours.
Or if you first bonded over your mutual love of all things Harry Potter, then make your big day magical with potion-themed cocktails, quidditch on the lawn, and tall dripping candles adorning your Hogwarts House-themed tables.
Have a travel-inspired wedding adventure
If you and your other half met while travelling or you’re well-known among your friends and families for your overseas adventures and working abroad, then a travel-inspired wedding theme is perfect for you.
Going travel-themed for your stationery is pretty easy to do, and looks great if it’s done well. Think boarding passes, passports and travel itineraries for save-the-dates and programs.
There’s a lot you can do with your wedding decor too. Globes, travel guides and compasses can all decorate your tables (named after places that mean something to you), with luggage labels as place cards. Guests can sign vintage postcards or world maps, which will also look amazing dotted around your venue.
As for food, this is a chance to really embrace your theme — pick your favourite country’s cuisine or go for a mash-up of your top dishes from around the world.
Finally, for an injection of adventure and fun, you could hire a travel-themed photo booth, where guests can pick tropical backgrounds and choose from an array of travel-themed fancy-dress and props.
Choosing a wedding theme that suits you both and fits in with your venue can be tricky, but it’s so exciting when a theme comes together on your big day.
Watching your friends and family enjoy themselves and create memories is the best, whether they’re watching a live band in the sun, or entertaining themselves in a glamorous casino. Let the five ideas above inspire you, and your big day will be truly special.
